Hijab is not a scarf to cover your hair.
Hijab is an action. You DO hijab, you follow the guidelines of hijab, and by doing so, you cover your hair… But it is so much more than that.
It is not simply “covering your hair.”
A Muslim woman should look ordinary when she leaves the privacy of her home. To look ordinary, to not seek attention, to not appear attractive - that is “to do hijab.”
Hijab includes (but is not limited to):
- covering the hair (on one’s head)
- covering the shape of the body (to the best of one’s ability)
- covering the skin of the body (apart from the hands up to the wrists and the face - the latter is debatable)
And how much you’re supposed to cover (awrah) is dependent upon the gathering and who is there. For example:
In front of believing women (Muslim women), a Muslimah is to be in hijab from naval to knee - this means, the criteria of hijab which were mentioned above should be applied to the part of the body that falls between the portion of naval to knees.
In front of non believing women (non Muslim women) and believing and non believing men (Muslim and non Muslim men) whom are not related to you by blood or specific marital relationships (non Mahrams), a Muslimah is to be in hijab from head to toe.
In front of the Muslim men that are blood related or related by certain marital relationships (Mahram men), a Muslimah is to be in hijab from naval to knee.
Should she choose to do so, she may cover more parts of herself, for the sake of her own comfort.
Men have their hijab as well.
So… My question to you is… Have you studied what hijab is and understand what hijab is and CHOOSE to go against the the commands of Allah and load on make up, wear tight dresses, wear jewelry, knowing that going against the commands of Allah is a sin… Or have you not studied what hijab is yet choose to wear what ever modified version of hijab makes sense to you and hope that you’re not sinning, knowing this is a form of jahiliyyah (a human form in which a person does not have knowledge about something, regardless of whether or not they have access to that knowledge)?
Before you start spamming me with hate messages…
I really love this answer by rumiandshit about hijab.

If you look at any initiative in any community, there are always people begging for donations, practically crying for donations and as listeners to the numerous cries for money and help, it consumes us, but we forget the best donation, dua.
If you can’t donate monetarily, give the best donation- DUA.
